Pixel 6

If the recent Pixel 5 only offers a simple fingerprint sensor placed on the back of the device, things could well change on the next iteration of Google's smartphone. The Pixel 6 could offer a fingerprint sensor under the screen .

Developer kdrag0n explains on Twitter that he found the following mention in the latest beta of Android 12 : 'UdfpsControllerGoogle' (Udfps for under display fingerprint scanner). It is therefore possible that Google will support the fingerprint sensor on its next smartphones, and what better choice than the Pixel 6 , which is already starting to be talked about?

GOOGLE WOULD OFFER A FINGERPRINT SENSOR UNDER THE SCREEN, LIKE ALL OTHER MANUFACTURERS

Logically, the Pixel 6 would be entitled to a sensor on the front , rather than on the back of the device, as is the case with the Pixel 5 that we tested a few months ago. On this model, it is indeed necessary to be satisfied with a simple back sensor: a solution which is certainly effective, but which is not always viable (when the telephone is placed on a table for example). And which is a bit outdated today for a mid / high end.

The Pixel 5's sensor could have been replaced by a sensor under the screen, especially considering the price of the device (over € 600). And it is all the more regrettable that in 2019, the Pixel 4 benefited from Face Unlock technology, which allowed the smartphone to be unlocked by facial recognition. We could obviously blame it for some weaknesses, including the non-support for closed eyes, but these were resolved in the months following the release of the Pixel 4. In short, difficult to understand why the Pixel 5 experienced a such a technological throwback to the Pixel 4.

Especially since on the competition side, the sensor under the screen has been adopted for several years already. Whether on the side of Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus or Samsung (and its famous ultrasonic sensor on its Galaxy S), manufacturers have all integrated this technology into their smartphones for at least 3 years. We can bet that Google will catch up with the Pixel 6.
