Samsung

Samsung is not going to restrict itself to folding smartphones. Determined to deal with companies like Oppo or LG, the Seoul giant admits to designing smartphones with a roll-up panel or a rotating screen. Ses new form factors are currently being developed in Samsung Monitor laboratories.

In the space of a few years, Samsung has rapidly developed itself as a strong pioneer in folding smartphones. Well ahead of its competitors, the South Korean maker has already sold many folding screen phones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 2 or the Galaxy Z Flip.

Not unexpectedly, Samsung isn't going to be limited to foldable devices. On the sidelines of Samsung's quarterly results meeting, Choi Kwon-youn, the group's vice president, reported the introduction of smartphones designed around screens that roll up or slip, reports The Elec.

ROLL-UP SCREENS AND SLIDING SCREENS

Samsung Display will first adopt new technologies to expand its portfolio,” says Choi Kwon-youn. The panels can be rolled or slided visibly in the Samsung Show labs. This isn't a treat. Several patents filed by Samsung in recent years testify to the manufacturer's involvement in the initial designs. In 2018, the company filed a patent for a sliding smartphone. Samsung even showed off a roll-up screen concept at a secret conference a few weeks ago.

Several big corporations in the industry have already presented smartphones with a roll-up screen. At the end of 2020, Oppo introduced the Oppo X 2021 with a roll-up screen that enables it to appear as a classic phone or a compact tablet. More recently, LG has released a working product dubbed LG Rollable and plans to bring it to market before the end of the year.

Samsung is still at the testing level right now. We're not able to find Samsung's branded roll-up phones on the market. Z Fold and Z Flip style folding phones also have a promising future ahead of them.
