iPhone XII

This October 13th Apple just made the expected iPhone XII official. It is the intermediate model in this new generation iPhone, being one step above the iPhone XII mini, but below the models XII Pro and XII Pro Max. Indeed, the iPhone XII aspires to be one of Apple's best-sellers, as already achieved by the iPhone XI based on specifications that rub the first line at a relatively tight price.

This year the strategy is repeated and, again, its intermediate model does not bet on the triple camera. However, there is an important (and expected) jump at the display level, which is that the iPhone XII implements OLED technology and Full HD+ (Super Retina XDR) resolution on a 6.1-inch panel. The 5G connection also becomes the protagonist on this iPhone XII which, on paper, will present a tough battle below a thousand euros. It should be noted that the design of the iPhone XII is similar to the one we saw last generation, although Apple has drawn some brushstroke with different strokes.

The first notable change comes from the hand of the frames, much tighter now on both the sides and the top and bottom. As you'll remember last year, iPhone XI had a lot more frame than iPhone XII, due, among others, to the lack of flexibility of IPS panels. Now, thanks to the implementation of the OLED display, Apple's new smartphone has a better front-end use. Specifically, according to Apple data, the iPhone XII is 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter than the iPhone XI, major changes considering that this model has the same diagonal screen last year. Thus, this year the iPhone XII is practically evenly matched in frames compared to the Pro models, which also reduce frame compared to the iPhone XI Pro and XI Pro Max. Regarding the much-spoken notch, he continues to make an appearance, occupying a good part of the front of the device.

If we turn the device around we find lines practically traced to those of last year, with the glass as the main protagonist. The device's aerospace aluminum frames have been redesigned. Now they remind us more of the iPhone IV, being much flater and straighter rather than the curvature that has been accompanying Apple devices from iPhone VI. In the case of this iPhone XII you do not jump to stainless steel, which is still reserved for Pro models. Regarding the panel, we have a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, this year with OLED technology. Thus ends the great gulf that was in front of the panel of the Pro models, since last year the iPhone XI arrived with HD+ resolution and IPS technology. The refresh rate is 60Hz, no Promotion for e-iPhone XII or its Pro siblings. The processor that brings the new smartphone to life is the Apple A14 Bionic, a chip that has already debuted the new iPad Air. It is the first mobile processor with 5 nanometer technology.

This processor has two high-performance cores and four cores dedicated to low-demand tasks, to try to maintain a balance between power and autonomy. This processor supports both SA and NSA 5G connectivity. As usual, Apple does not give figures on RAM, but it is expected to be 4 GB on this iPhone XII and 6 GB for Pro models. At the autonomy level the charger is lost in the box and the 18W fast charging is maintained. This means we'll have to buy the Apple charger separately, in case we don't have one at home.

The biometrics-level bet is Face ID again. Apple re-implements its 3D facial recognition aided by a point projector and whose information ensures that it is saved locally. One of the great innovations in this iPhone is MagSafe, a magnetic technology that allows you to connect different accessories, such as magazine covers. It also allows improvements in wireless charging, technology already present on iPhone XI, but improved in this new iPhone family. The iPhone XII opts for a dual camera setup, just like the last generation, with the iPhone XI. The main sensor is still 12 megapixels, along with a wide angle also of 12 megapixels. Just like last year, we had optical stabilizer on the main sensor.

In this case, the iPhone XII has a sensor with better lens and f/1.7 aperture, promising better low light photographs. As is customary at Apple, the work falls mainly on the software, where there have been great improvements. The first is next-generation HDR, Smart HDR 3. Better dynamic range is promised and the detail aims to be quite rich. The big leap, however, is at the video level. The iPhone XII is the first mobile capable of recording in 4K Dolby Vision. Specifically, it is capable of recording video with a color depth of 10 bits. Similarly, you can edit Dolby Vision videos from the Photos, iMovie or Clips app, from your phone.
